Powys Youth Music Project 2009
The Powys Youth Music Project has been running for over 10 years and enables young people from across North Powys to access musical equipment and professional musicians to create their own songs. We run four sessions or equivalent in each Youth Centre in North Powys and involves both young people who have never played an instrument before and those who already play and are looking to develop their skills. The project allows the group to learn together and share their skills to create a song which they usually go on to either record or perform live in a variety of settings.
This year we have recorded a band from Llanfyllin High School who won the chance to be recorded and get professional support as part of the schools annual battle of the bands competition. The Llanidloes Youth Centre band also recorded their song and performed live at the Powys Youth Arts Festival to an audience of young people from across Powys. Tommy Mills and Tony Skeggs supported both these processes. Welshpool experimented with digital music, creating a number of tunes which were then used as a soundtrack to a DVD about Welshpool Youth Centre and the activities that happen there. Machynlleth chose to do African Drumming with Patrick Harrison as there were a keen group of young people who wanted to learn more skills in this area.
